Soil Resistivity Testing

PT Ground Solutions have in-house capabilities to provide soil resistivity testing. Soil resistivity testing is a non-invasive method where an electric current is transmitted into the ground and measurements are taken to assess the capacity of the ground to transmit the current. It is particularly important for earthing systems where electrical circuits require a means of dissipating the currents, where they can become overload.

Tower Footing Resistivity Testing

Tower footing resistance assessments may be required to assess the earthing capabilities of existing overhead towers. This may be due to system upgrades or ageing infrastructure. High energy generated during a lightning strike or where large energy surcharges occur, need to be discharged through the earthing system, usually the earthing wire and then through the tower body structure and safely into the ground. PT Ground Solutions have in-house capabilities to provide tower footing resistivity testing at exiting towers, using industry leading equipment capable of taking earth resistance measurements without the need to disconnect overhead earth cables.

Dynamic Cone Penetration (DCP)

DCP testing uses a hammer to drive a cone into the ground. Each hammer blow is measured and recorded against the depth of penetration. This is a cost-effective technique to assess the strength of the soil beneath the surface. It is usually used for the assessment of roads or car parks and often correlated with California Bearing Ratio (CBR) for pavement design.

Plate Bearing Testing

A plate bearing test is used to determine the ground’s bearing capacity by applying an increasing load to induce settlement. It’s often used in situations where the ground particle sizes are large, or the soil is expected to be firm. CBR values can be derived for pavement design or it can be used for earthworks compliance testing to ensure adequate compaction or installation.

Instrumentation and Monitoring

PT Ground Solutions can provide all types of instrumentation and monitoring services. These could be for downhole geotechnical assessments such as inclinometers or for groundwater assessments, such as water level monitoring or permeability testing. Our team of experienced engineers can attend sites all throughout the UK to complete monitoring programmes for our clients. We can provide continuous support monitoring services, where monitoring programmes require multiple visits over long durations.

Density Testing (Sand Replacement / Nuclear Density)

Density testing can be carried out on site using various methods. The most common methods are sand replacement or nuclear density tests. The measurements are used to determine in situ density and results are commonly used in the assessment of soil compaction during earthworks operations. PT Ground Solutions have a team of experienced engineers, who can provide in-house density testing services. Our experienced engineers can maintain a continuous site presence throughout a project or carryout testing on an ad-hoc basis. We can work with you to deliver the services your projects require.
